High Quality and Affordable Therapy

Therapy: Start moving towards the life you want to live

Therapy is a safe and non-judgmental space where we can slow downtake a step back and explore what is working well for you in your life and what isn’t working so well. My approach is warm and accepting; it is also practical: when you identify areas of your life that you’d like to improve, we will work together to make a concrete plan for how to make positive changes.

I aim to help my clients identify what really matters to them in their lives, and then overcome barriers (e.g., anxiety, depression, stress, trauma symptoms) that seem to stand in the way of moving towards a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
Couple Therapy
I have years of experience providing CBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to individuals and I am now also in the process of becoming a certified EFT therapist for couples. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is considered the gold standard of treatment for distressed couples, with recent studies showing that 70% of couples are “symptom free” after treatment!

 

I am really looking forward to helping couples and, because of that, will offer couple therapy at a lower price during 2024.

People often come to therapy when they want something to change in their lives. My job is to help you make that change, and start moving closer to the life you want to live. Today.

I am trained and experienced in focused acceptance and commitment therapy (FACT), the “brief therapy” version of ACT. FACT is a fast-paced and efficient form of therapy. We will focus on one problem at a time and you will leave the first session with a plan for change, a plan that you believe in. I have practiced FACT with hundreds of clients. For some people, one session is all they need to make that crucial pivot and start heading in a new direction. Other people plan a follow-up visit or two to review how the plan worked, make changes to the plan, or practice new skills. FACT sessions can be shorter (15-45 minutes) and therefore more affordable, but without sacrificing results.

Online Therapy
In-person therapy is available for clients in Turku, Finland.

Online therapy or consultation via a secure platform is available to everyone!

Evidence suggests that one-on-one therapy provided via videochat produces equivalent results to in-person therapy. In fact, some clients seem to respond even better to online therapy! I have experienced online therapy as both a therapist and as a client and I have seen firsthand how real, human connections can be built, even when client and therapist are on opposite sides of the globe.

I am licensed to provide therapy remotely for clients who are physically located in Washington, DC. I do not accept insurance, but try to keep my rates reasonable for private-pay customers. Please get in touch via text or Whatsapp and we will set up a time to chat.

About me

Sarah Coolidge, PhD, LICSW

Authentic, Experienced, Accepting

I am an American living in Turku, Finland. I have 10 years of experience offering therapy, brief therapy, and crisis counseling to adults and young people in both the USA and Finland.

Education

I received my PhD in philosophy from UCLA in 2011 and my Masters in social work from the Catholic University of America in 2015. I have extensive training in traditional CBT as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), where I have been fortunate enough to be trained by some of the leading lights in the field (Steve Hayes, Kirk Strosahl, Kelly Wilson, Robyn Walser, Russ Harris). For more about ACT, see here. I am also currently pursuing training and certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples.
*Please note that I am not a registered “psychotherapist” in Finland. I practice therapy based on my education, training and experience in the United States. 

Personal Philosophy

I believe in the power of people to overcome the greatest obstacles in the service of what’s important to them.
 
I believe this because I have seen it happen. I have had the honor of walking alongside clients who struggled with any number of challenges. These clients have taught me that it is always possible to consciously choose who you want to be and what you want to stand for, no matter how challenging the context. 
 

My specializations

I practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is a transdiagnostic approach. In other words, my aim is to reduce human suffering and promote valued living, whatever stressors, mental health diagnoses or symptoms have been getting in the way.
That said, you may still want to know whether I have experience working with folks experiencing your situation or symptoms*! I have extensive experience working with people experiencing:

*A special note for immigrants in Finland: Moving to a new country is always a challenge. The language, the bureaucracy, the loss of previous connections, the loss of personal identity, the loneliness, the weather… I have been through it myself, and have worked with many clients facing this challenge in Finland.  You are not alone and therapeutic support can really make a difference.
